Program Mission, Description, and Outcomes
Mission:
The mission of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is to train effective entry-level diagnostic medical sonographers in operating special imaging equipment to create images and conduct tests.
Description:
Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a medical profession that consists of utilizing ultrasound to visualize the body's soft tissues, which aids in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers are employed in a variety of medical facilities and are an integral part of the diagnostic team. Sonographers work closely with physicians and surgeons before, during and after procedures to assess and diagnose medical conditions.
Program Accreditation: Program to be accredited by the by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). College Accreditation: Daytona State College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associates and bachelor’s degrees. Degree-granting institutions also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Outcomes:

Obtain, review, and integrate pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results.
- Perform appropriate procedures and record anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data for interpretation by a physician.
- Record, analyze, and process diagnostic data and other pertinent observations made during the procedure for presentation to the interpreting physician.
- Exercise discretion and judgment in the performance of sonographic and/or other diagnostic services.
- Demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patients and colleagues.
- Act in a professional and ethical manner.

Additional Admission Requirements

Completion of the following courses with a grade of 'C' or better is required before being considered for admission into the program: BSC1085C (Human Anatomy & Physiology I and Lab), ENC1101 (Introduction to Composition), MAC1105 (College Algebra) and PHY1020 (Energy and its Environmental Effects).

Admission criteria has been established using a point system and are as objective as possible. A brief statement explaining your interest in Respiratory Care is required along with application paperwork.
- Students must have a standard high school diploma (or GED) and be at least 18 years of age to enroll.

Applicants starting in a Florida Public high school in 2003 or after and graduating from a Florida public high school with a standard high school diploma and active duty military are exempt from any placement testing. Those applicants that have successfully completed college level English and/or Math may be exempt from placement testing.

Admissions into the program will be contingent on the satisfactory completion of both a drug screen and a background check consisting of a fingerprint check of state and federal criminal history information conducted through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Students will be held accountable for the policies and procedures of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program as outlined in the DMS student handbook, as well as the College Student handbook.
