MUL2380 Popular Music in America

This course looks at the events, both social and musical, that affected pop music in America. In addition, a timeline will be established and major artistic contributions identified for the various periods of America pop music to include Blues (Late 1800s and early 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s & 50s, 1960s - present), Ragtime (1890s - 1920s, Jazz (early 1900s, 1920s, 1930s, Post 1940s/Modern Jazz), the Broadway stage (mid 19th Century Early Roots, Early 20th Century and the establishment of the American Musical, 1940s - 1960s and the Golden Age, Post Golden Age), Latin influence ( early influence 1930s - 1970s, 1990s and beyond), Country (1920s - present, Rock and Roll (late 1940s - 1950s establishment, 1950s -1960s peak popularity), Top 40 (1970s - 1980s), and Hip-Hop (Late 1980s - present). This course contributes to satisfying the Gordon Rule (State Rule 6A-10.030) writing requirement. This course will help satisfy the graduation requirements of the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree.
