Program Overview

Mission:

The mission of the Emergency Medical Technician program is to provide students with the education and training necessary to deliver high-quality, compassionate patient care in the prehospital environment while emphasizing student success, excellence, and diversity.

Description:

The program prepares students with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to provide prehospital emergency medical care. Instruction emphasizes recognizing the signs and symptoms of illness and injury and applying procedures essential to delivering basic life support. The program prepares students for state certification as Emergency Medical Technicians and is also available for individuals seeking personal or professional development. Training includes 90 hours of clinical experience with prehospital care agencies and hospital emergency departments. Graduates are qualified for employment as entry-level Emergency Medical Technicians in emergency medical services, hospitals, and industrial medicine.

Program Accreditation: The Daytona State College EMS Program is approved by the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, as meeting all requirements established under Florida Statute 401.

Outcomes:

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  1. Exhibit effective communication within the Emergency Medical Services profession.

  2. Demonstrate professional behaviors consistent with the expectations of an entry-level Emergency Medical Technician.

  3. Demonstrate safe practices within the Emergency Medical Services profession.

Program Requirements

This is a Limited Access Program.

Admission:

  • Possess a standard high school diploma or GED.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Submit an application for admission to Daytona State College.
  • Complete a physical examination and required immunizations.
  • Complete a satisfactory FDLE/FBI background check and drug screening.
  • Attend the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Orientation.

Completion:

  • Wear the required uniform when applicable.
  • Comply with the policies and procedures outlined in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Student Policy Manual and the Daytona State College Student Handbook.

Career and Labor Market Information

Graduates may pursue employment as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), providing basic life support and emergency medical care in prehospital settings. Employment opportunities include ambulance services, fire rescue agencies, hospital emergency departments, industrial medicine, public safety agencies, theme parks, and other emergency response organizations. This program also serves as the prerequisite for continued study in the Paramedic program.
