ASL2160 American Sign Language III
American Sign Language III builds on foundational ASL skills with an emphasis on building vocabulary, extended discourse, complex grammatical structures, and fluency. Students develop proficiency in producing and understanding longer narratives in a variety of contexts. The course expands students’ expressive and receptive skills through targeted work on classifier application, visual-spatial awareness, role shifting, non manual markers, and ASL expansion features. Students will also discuss contemporary issues affecting the Deaf community, including accessibility, identity, and linguistic diversity. This course offers opportunities for community engagement with academic learning through Service Learning. Through this experience, students will deepen their understanding of Deaf culture while applying intermediate high ASL skills in authentic settings. Completion of this course helps satisfy the Daytona State College foreign language requirement.
