Program Mission, Description, and Outcomes
Mission:
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program promotes the ideals of the Daytona State College (DSC) Mission Statement of emphasizing student success, embracing excellence and diversity, as well as fostering innovation to enhance teaching and learning. Each student in the sonography program will receive academic and clinical experiences to provide them with a professional foundation to become an effective, responsible, licensed, and contributing team member in radiologic sciences, and ultrasound departments. Each program graduate will understand placing the patient as the center focus of healthcare professionalism, who collaborate their career paths through lifelong learning.
Description:
Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a medical profession that consists of utilizing ultrasound to visualize the body's soft tissues, which aids in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers are employed in a variety of medical facilities and are an integral part of the diagnostic team. Sonographers work closely with physicians and surgeons before, during and after procedures to assess and diagnose medical conditions.
College Accreditation: Daytona State College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associates and baccalaureate degrees. Daytona State College also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Outcomes:
Graduates of the program will be able to:

Integrate scientific principles which form the foundation of entry level sonography into clinical practice.

Differentiate the normal vs. abnormal states of anatomy and physiology observed and documented in the clinical ultrasound setting.

Describe his/her role and responsibilities to the patient, the physician or radiologist, and other members of the health care team using effective communication.

Perform examinations, under the supervision of the radiologist or physician consistent with evidenced-based sonography practice safely, effectively, and efficiently.

Analyze and evaluate medical sonography or radiology related literature in pursuit of lifelong learning. Possess knowledge and the understanding of continuing medical education, explore medical conference opportunities, and assist leadership in the sharing of evidence-based sonography knowledge, processes, and ethical radiologic procedures.

Value active participation in the American Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and Cardiovascular Credentialing International licensing certification boards. Possess knowledge and locating the various societies that represent the sonography profession, as means of professional development.

Additional Admission Requirements
This is a Limited Access Program.

Have a standard high school diploma or GED.
-
Be at least 18 years of age.

Complete the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) with a minimum 10th grade level for reading, language and mathematics. See an Academic Advisor to determine developmental course requirements.
- Exemptions include:
- Florida public high school students who graduated after the year 2003 and earned a Standard High School diploma.
- Active duty military applicants.
- Those who have successfully completed college level English and/or Math.
- Possess Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for the Health Care Provider to include adults, infant, children, and automatic external defibrillator (AED) through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
- Provide satisfactory results of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check and drug screen.
Continuing Enrollment Requirements
Continuing enrollment approval will be required to enroll in the program specific courses based on a selections process after completing the required general education courses. Student selection for continuing enrollment is based on specific admission criteria and a points system.
- Earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better.
- Complete the following course with a grade of "C" or better:
- Complete the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) with a minimum composite score of 65%.
- Minimum scores must be met in one attempt; combining scores from multiple tests is not allowed.
- May test a total of four times within a calendar year.
- TEAS scores are good for three years from test date.
- Students will be required to take the TEAS exam at a DSC Assessment Center.

Earn a grade "C" or better in all program specific and prerequisite courses.

Adhere to the policy and procedures of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program as outlined in the DMS student policy/rule book, as well as the college student handbook.
