Program Mission, Description, and Outcomes

Mission:

The mission of the Allen School of Nursing is to provide an innovative learning environment that promotes excellence in the professional role. Programs prepare students to exhibit professionalism, ethical behaviors, and competency in meeting the dynamic healthcare needs of individuals across the lifespan, and across healthcare continuums.

Description:

The associate degree nursing program prepares students to pursue a career in nursing by providing high quality instruction in classroom, laboratory and clinical learning environments. Healthcare employment opportunities are available in long-term care, home health, hospital, and outpatient settings. Clinical experiences are provided at local extended care facilities, hospitals, and other community agencies. Job title: Registered Nurse. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses.

Classes admit in January and August. When the associate nursing degree is completed and the graduate obtains licensure, the graduate is eligible for admission to Daytona State College's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program.

College Accreditation: Daytona State College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associates and baccalaureate degrees. Daytona State College also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Program Outcomes:

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  1. Patient Centered Care: The graduate of the associate degree nursing program will prioritize the patient or designee as the source of control and full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient’s preferences, values, and needs.

  2. Teamwork and Collaboration: The graduate of the associate degree nursing program will perform effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve quality patient care.

  3. Evidence-Based Practice: The graduate of the associate degree nursing program will integrate best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care.

  4. Quality Improvement: The graduate of the associate degree nursing program will design quality measures for monitoring outcomes of patient-care processes in the health care system.

  5. Safety: The graduate of the associate degree nursing program will minimize risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance.

  6. Informatics: The graduate of the associate degree nursing program will apply information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making.

This program is eligible for federal financial aid and state Bright Futures Scholarship Program.

Additional Admission Requirements

This is a limited access program. 

  • Have a standard high school diploma or GED.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.  

  • Complete and submit a physical examination by a licensed physician, including the following required immunizations and exam:

    • influenza, tetanus-diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and hepatitis B, and
    • a negative PPD test (or chest x-ray if indicated) for tuberculosis
  • Possess Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for the Health Care Provider to include adults, infant, children, and automatic external defibrillator (AED) through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

  • Provide satisfactory results of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check and drug screen.

  • Meet eligibility requirements for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) by having no criminal record, or if a convicted felon, by having your civil rights fully restored, as required by the Florida Board of Nursing.

  • Ensure nursing courses for readmission or transfer were completed within one year and evaluated by the Nursing Readmission and Transfer Committee; note that transfer students are accepted on a limited basis based on space availability.

Continuing Enrollment Requirements

Continuing enrollment approval will be required to enroll in the program specific courses based on a selections process after completing the required general education courses. Student selection for continuing enrollment is based on specific admission criteria and a points system. 

  • Earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better.
  • Complete the following course with a grade of 'C' or better:
  • Complete the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) with a minimum composite score of 65%.

    • Minimum scores must be met in one attempt; combining scores from multiple tests is not allowed.
    • May test a total of four times within a calendar year.
    • TEAS scores are good for three years from test date.
    • Only TEAS scores taken at DSC or a Florida public institution of higher education, or proctored online by ATI will be accepted.
  • Submit an application for continuing enrollment between May and September.

Additional Completion Requirements

  • Earn a grade "C" or better in all program specific and prerequisite courses.  

  • Take Nursing courses in the sequence published in the sample program of study. 

  • Satisfy the Civic Literacy Competency requirement.

  • Satisfy the Humanities (6 credit) graduation requirement as established by Daytona State College for its Associate of Arts degree program, if progressing to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (BSN) program.
  • Adhere to the policy and procedures of the Nursing program as outlined in the nursing student policy handbook, as well as those outlines in the Daytona State College Student Handbook.
