Program Overview

Mission:

The Bob & Carol Allen School of Nursing provides an innovative learning environment that promotes excellence in nursing. The Nursing Assistant program prepares students to demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, and competency in meeting the health care needs of individuals across the lifespan and across health care settings.

Description:

The Nursing Assistant program prepares individuals for entry-level employment as health care professionals providing basic nursing care to clients in acute, sub-acute, assisted living, and long-term care settings. The program consists of 80 hours of classroom and laboratory instruction and 40 hours of clinical experience.

Students learn interpersonal skills, medical terminology, legal and ethical responsibilities, safe and efficient work practices, gerontology, nutrition, health and safety, and employability skills. The program prepares students for employment as nursing assistants after passing the nursing assistant competency examination in accordance with Florida Statutes 464.203.

Workforce Training Program: This short-term vocational certificate prepares students for entry-level employment and industry-required competency testing in the health care field.

Outcomes:

Graduates of the program will be able to:

1. Assist adult clients with activities of daily living and basic care in long-term care, sub-acute, and assisted living settings under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
2. Demonstrate safe and accurate client care skills while observing and reporting the physical, spiritual, and psychosocial needs of clients.
3. Assist the nurse in planning and implementing care related to nutrition, hydration, mobility, and elimination needs.
4. Describe the needs of clients and families experiencing acute, chronic, terminal, emotional, or psychological conditions.
5. Demonstrate professional behaviors within the role and scope of the nursing assistant under the supervision of the nurse.

Program Requirements

Admission:

• Possess a standard high school diploma or GED.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Complete and submit a physical examination by a licensed physician, including required immunizations for tetanus-diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and Hepatitis B.
• Provide a negative PPD test or chest x-ray if indicated for tuberculosis screening.
• Provide satisfactory results of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check and drug screening.
• Possess Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for health care providers, including adults, infants, children, and automatic external defibrillator (AED), through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

Completion:

• Earn a grade of "C" or better in all program-specific courses.
