Program Overview

Mission:

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry 6–12 prepares highly qualified, state-certified teachers for grades 6–12. The program emphasizes scientifically based instruction, diversity, ethical teaching practices, student excellence, and innovative instructional strategies.

Description:

This Florida Department of Education-approved educator preparation program fulfills the coursework, professional education competencies, and field experiences required for eligibility to earn the Florida Professional Educator Certificate in Chemistry 6–12.

Teacher Preparation Pathway: This state-approved educator preparation program prepares graduates to meet Florida certification requirements for teaching Chemistry in grades 6–12.

Outcomes:

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate mastery of the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAP) and Professional Education Competencies (PEC).
  2. Demonstrate mastery of Reading Competencies 1 and 2.
  3. Demonstrate mastery of the Chemistry 6–12 Subject Area Competencies (SAC) and Skills for Teacher Certification.
  4. Demonstrate competency in the Florida Uniform Core Curriculum.

Admission and Degree Requirements

  • Submit a Daytona State College application for admission.
  • Possess a conferred Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Submit official transcripts from all previously attended institutions. International transcripts must be evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
  • Earn a minimum cumulative college grade point average of 2.5.
  • Earn a grade of "C" or higher in the following prerequisite courses:
    • EDF1005 Introduction to the Teaching Profession
    • EEX2010 Introduction to Exceptional Learners
    • MAC2311C Calculus I (4 credits)
    • CHM1045C General Chemistry I with Lab (4 credits)
    • CHM1046C General Chemistry II with Lab (4 credits)
    • One of the following physics sequences:
  • Submit passing scores for at least two of the four FTCE General Knowledge Test (GKT) subtests or the FTCE Chemistry 6–12 Subject Area Examination (SAE). Contact the School of Education for additional testing resources.
  • Obtain volunteer clearance through Volusia County Schools Volunteer Programs. Students must also register through the Raptor Kiosk at a Volusia County school site using a government-issued photo ID.
  • Applicants should review the disqualifying offenses outlined in Florida Statute 1012.315, as these offenses may affect program completion and future employment.

Completion:

  • Successfully complete SLS3355L prior to the first semester of enrollment.
  • Complete 36 credits of General Education coursework.
  • Demonstrate foreign language competency by completing two years of the same foreign language in high school or two semesters of the same college-level foreign language.
  • Earn a grade of "C" or better in all program-specific and prerequisite courses.

Sample Program of Study

The courses listed in the first two years of the Sample Program of Study are recommendations. The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Chemistry Education is a 2+2 program and full admittance into the program will be granted upon completion of all prerequisite courses and additional admission requirements.

BCH3023C: After completion of the first two years and receipt of AA degree, students must apply for admission into the Bachelor of Science in Secondary Chemistry Education program and complete additional admission requirements. Additionally, students must earn a "C" or higher in all BS program courses and must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher throughout the duration of the program. Please note that BCH3023C requires a one credit lab component.
