Program Overview
Mission:
The Bachelor of Science in Exceptional Student Education K–12 prepares highly qualified, state-certified teachers to serve students with disabilities in grades K–12. The program integrates Reading and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) competencies while emphasizing scientifically based instruction, diversity, ethical teaching practices, student excellence, and innovative instructional strategies.
Description:
This Florida Department of Education-approved educator preparation program fulfills the coursework, professional education competencies, and field experiences required for eligibility to earn the Florida Professional Educator Certificate in Exceptional Student Education K–12. The program also includes endorsements in Reading and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Florida Approved Educator Preparation Program: Graduates who successfully complete program requirements are eligible to apply for the Florida Professional Educator Certificate in Exceptional Student Education K–12. The program also includes Reading and ESOL endorsements.
Outcomes:
Graduates of the program will be able to:
- Demonstrate mastery of the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAP) and Professional Education Competencies (PEC).
- Demonstrate mastery of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Performance Standards and Subject Area Competencies.
- Demonstrate mastery of Reading Competencies 1–5.
- Demonstrate mastery of the Exceptional Student Education K–12 Subject Area Competencies (SAC) and Skills for Teacher Certification.
- Demonstrate competency in the Florida Uniform Core Curriculum.
Admission and Degree Requirements
Admission:
- Submit a Daytona State College application for admission.
- Submit a Bachelor of Science in Education application.
- Possess a conferred Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- Submit official transcripts from all previously attended institutions. International transcripts must be evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
- Earn a grade of "C" or higher in the following prerequisite courses:
- EDF1005 Introduction to the Teaching Profession
- EEX2010 Introduction to Exceptional Learners
- MAE2801 Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers
- Submit passing scores for at least two of the four FTCE General Knowledge Test (GKT) subtests or the FTCE Exceptional Student Education K–12 Subject Area Examination (SAE). Contact the School of Education for additional testing resources.
- Obtain volunteer clearance through Volusia County Schools Volunteer Programs. Students must also register through the Raptor Kiosk at a Volusia County school site using a government-issued photo ID.
- Applicants should review the disqualifying offenses outlined in Florida Statute 1012.315, as these offenses may affect program completion and future employment.
Completion:
- Successfully complete SLS3355L prior to the first semester of enrollment.
- Complete 36 credits of General Education coursework.
- Demonstrate foreign language competency by completing two years of the same foreign language in high school or two semesters of the same college-level foreign language.
- Earn a grade of "C" or better in all program-specific and prerequisite courses.

Sample Program of Study
The courses listed in the first two years of the Sample Program of Study are recommendations. The Bachelor of Science in Exceptional Student Education is a 2+2 program and full admittance into the program will be granted upon completion of all prerequisite courses and additional admission requirements.
Year 3
All EEX classes may not be offered in every semester. It is strongly recommended that the students work with an advisor within the School of Education to ensure appropriate scheduling of classes to stay on track toward graduation.
