Program Overview

Mission:

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program promotes student success, excellence, diversity, and innovation in teaching and learning. Students receive academic and clinical experiences that provide a professional foundation for becoming effective and responsible members of healthcare teams. Graduates place the patient at the center of care and pursue lifelong learning.

Description:

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a medical profession that uses ultrasound to visualize soft tissues of the body to aid in diagnosis and treatment. Sonographers are employed in a variety of healthcare settings and are integral members of the diagnostic team. Sonographers work closely with physicians before, during, and after procedures to assess and diagnose medical conditions.

Outcomes:

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  1. Integrate scientific principles into clinical sonography practice.
  2. Differentiate normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology.
  3. Communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
  4. Perform examinations safely and efficiently under physician supervision.
  5. Analyze sonography literature for lifelong learning.
  6. Demonstrate professional engagement and certification awareness.

Program Requirements

Admission:

This is a Limited Access Program.

  • Standard high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • PERT scores at the 10th-grade level in reading, language, and mathematics, unless exempt.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Health Care Providers through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Satisfactory FDLE/FBI background check and drug screening.
  • Minimum TEAS composite score of 65%.
    • TEAS scores must be earned in a single attempt.
    • Maximum of four TEAS attempts permitted per calendar year.
    • TEAS scores are valid for three years.
    • Only TEAS scores earned at Daytona State College are accepted.

Enrollment:

Continuing enrollment approval is required prior to enrollment in program-specific courses.

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Earn a grade of "C" or better in the following courses:
    • SON1000 Introduction to Medical Sonography
    • ENC1101 Introduction to Composition
    • MAC1105 College Algebra
    • BSC1085C Human Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab
    • PHY1032 Energy and Its Environmental Effects

Completion:

  • Earn a grade "C" or better in all program-specific and prerequisite courses.
  • Follow the policies and procedures outlined in the DMS Student Policy/Rule Book and the Daytona State College Student Handbook.
