Program Overview
Mission:
The mission of the Allen School of Nursing is to provide an innovative learning environment that promotes excellence in professional nursing practice. The program prepares students to demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, and competency in meeting the dynamic healthcare needs of individuals across the lifespan and healthcare continuum.
Description:
The program is designed for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Paramedics, and Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs) seeking an Associate of Science degree in Nursing. Employment opportunities are available in long-term care, home health, hospital, and outpatient settings. Clinical experiences are provided through local extended care facilities, hospitals, and community agencies.
Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and pursue employment as Registered Nurses.
Students are admitted in January and August. Upon completion of the Associate of Science degree and licensure requirements, graduates are eligible for admission to Daytona State College’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program.

Outcomes:
Graduates of the program will be able to:
- Provide patient-centered care that respects patient preferences, values, and needs.
- Collaborate effectively within nursing and interprofessional healthcare teams to support quality patient care.
- Integrate evidence-based practice into clinical decision-making and healthcare delivery.
- Apply quality improvement principles to evaluate and improve patient care outcomes.
- Promote patient and provider safety through effective systems awareness and professional practice.
- Utilize informatics and healthcare technologies to support communication, decision-making, and patient care.
Program Requirements
Admission:
- Standard high school diploma or GED.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Successful completion of an LPN, Paramedic, or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) program and one year of work experience within the last three years.
- One of the following credentials for eligibility to receive 10 credit hours of advanced standing:
- Unencumbered Florida or multistate LPN licensure.
- Paramedic certification.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.
- Official documentation demonstrating good standing with the regulating board or agency. Additional documentation requirements include:
- LPNs: Current Florida practical nursing license.
- Paramedics and RRTs: Florida certification and one of the following:
- Employment as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA),
- Completion of a CNA program, or
- Current Florida CNA certification.
- Minimum TEAS composite score of 65%.
- TEAS scores must be earned in a single attempt.
- Maximum of four TEAS attempts permitted per calendar year.
- TEAS scores are valid for three years.
- Only TEAS scores earned at Daytona State College are accepted.
- Physical examination and required immunizations, including:
- Influenza, tetanus-diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and hepatitis B.
- Negative tuberculosis screening (PPD test or chest x-ray, if indicated).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Health Care Providers through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Demonstrated competency in required medication skills laboratory procedures.
- LPNs are exempt from this requirement.
- Basic computer competency skills.
- Satisfactory FDLE/FBI background check and drug screening.
- Eligibility for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) as required by the Florida Board of Nursing.
- Nursing courses for transfer or readmission must have been completed within one year and approved by the Nursing Readmission and Transfer Committee. Transfer students are accepted on a limited basis based on space availability.
Enrollment:
Continuing enrollment approval is required prior to enrollment in program-specific courses.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Earn a grade of “C” or better in the following courses:
Completion:
- Earn a grade of “C” or better in all program-specific and prerequisite courses.
- Complete Nursing courses in the sequence published in the sample program of study.
- Follow the policies and procedures outlined in the Nursing Student Policy Handbook and the Daytona State College Student Handbook.

Advanced Standing
NUR2990: This course is applicable to students who hold a Florida license as a practical nurse, or certification as a paramedic, or registered respiratory therapist.
