Program Overview

Mission:

The mission of the Surgical Technology program is to provide students with an innovative learning experience that prepares them to become professional and competent members of the surgical team. Successful completion of the program prepares graduates to sit for the national certification examination.

Description:

The program provides students the opportunity to develop the technical ability, knowledge, and skills required for entry-level employment in surgical settings including hospital operating rooms and freestanding healthcare facilities. Instruction includes classroom lecture, intensive training in a mock operating room laboratory setting, and clinical experiences in local healthcare facilities.

Graduates are required to take the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification examination upon successful completion of the program.

Program Accreditation: The Surgical Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Committee for Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). Outcomes:

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  1. Apply principles of aseptic technique in the perioperative setting.
  2. Demonstrate skills necessary to function as a member of the surgical team.
  3. Organize instrumentation and supplies within the perioperative environment.
  4. Collaborate with members of the surgical team to deliver quality patient care.

Program Requirements

Admission:

This is a Limited Access Program.

  • Standard high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Attend a program information session and interview.
  • PERT scores at the 10th-grade level in reading, language, and mathematics.
  • Satisfactory FDLE/FBI background check and drug screening.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Health Care Providers through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Enrollment:

Continuing enrollment approval is required prior to enrollment in program-specific courses.

  • Earn a grade of “C” or better in the following courses:
    • HSC1531 Medical Terminology
    • STS1302 Introduction to Surgical Technology
    • MAC1105 College Algebra
    • BSC1085C Human Anatomy and Physiology I and Lab

Completion:

  • Earn a grade of “C” or better in all program-specific and prerequisite courses.
  • Follow the policies and procedures outlined in the Surgical Technology Student Handbook and the Daytona State College Student Handbook.

This program is eligible for federal financial aid and state Bright Futures Scholarship Program.

Graduates may pursue employment in surgical technology, including roles such as Surgical Technologist, Operating Room Technician, Surgical Scrub Technician, and OR Assistant. Occupational Overview: Prepare operating rooms, sterilize instruments, arrange surgical equipment, maintain sterile technique, and assist surgeons, nurses, and other members of the surgical team before, during, and after operative procedures to promote safe and effective patient care.
