Program Overview

Mission:

The Interior Design Technology program provides students with quality training, practice, and skill development necessary for success in diverse career opportunities within the interior design profession. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, engagement with the design community, and professional preparation.

Description:

The Interior Design Technology program prepares students for entry-level employment in interior design, architecture, and construction-related industries. Coursework includes design principles, drafting, presentation techniques, technical documentation, and professional practices.

Students may earn the Window Fashions Certification prior to graduation. Graduates may pursue professional licensure after completion of required education and work experience and are eligible to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.

College Credit Certificate That Leads to This Degree: The Interior Design Technology - Kitchen and Bath Specialization - 081600 College Credit Certificate is embedded within this degree. Students may pursue the AS degree while simultaneously earning the embedded certificate, or pursue the certificate independently to develop or upgrade technical skills. Outcomes:

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  1. Apply elements and principles of design to interior spaces.
  2. Execute functional and balanced space planning techniques.
  3. Specify furniture, fixtures, equipment, materials, lighting, and accessories.
  4. Identify building codes and regulations related to interior spaces.
  5. Analyze historical and cultural influences on interior environments.
  6. Explain sustainability issues within the built environment.
  7. Communicate design concepts effectively.
  8. Demonstrate professional and entrepreneurial skills.

Completion Requirement:

  • Earn a grade of “C” or better in all program-specific and prerequisite courses.

Career and Labor Market Information

Graduates may pursue employment in residential and commercial interior design, including roles such as Interior Designer, Design Assistant, Space Planner, Kitchen and Bath Designer, Visual Merchandiser, and Interior Design Sales Consultant. In the Volusia–Flagler workforce region, approximately 512 interior designers are employed, with an average annual salary of $56,530 and approximately 48 annual job openings.
